The global value of the computer games industry was $20 billion.
It is an astonishing figure that is estimated to have been growing at a rate of 20% per year in spite of the recession.
It is a feature of products that can be enjoyed in the comfort of your own home that they tend to do relatively better in times of recession. The gaming industry has now overtaken music in terms of annual sales.
There is an opportunity in this trend which Ireland is well placed to take advantage of. From the early years of the Celtic Tiger we made a name for ourselves in the IT sector.
In 2000 one in every three computers bought in Europe had been made in Ireland and we were the leading exporter of software in the world.
Our third level institutions are now seeking to capitalise on the potential career opportunities offered by gaming software, and Trinity College, along with Carlow, Letterkenny and Athlone I.T.s are all offering computer programming courses geared specifically at the gaming sector.
There have been some notably successful start-ups in the field in Ireland.
Havok and Demonware, two companies that were set up by Trinity IT graduates and that focused on software features useful to big games developers have both been bought out in recent years.
Havok was bought by Intel for €110 million in 2007 and Demonware was bought by the world’s largest games company Activision Blizzard the same year for the not negligible sum of €15 million.
Amongst the games that Demonware software features in is Call of Duty which is tipped by the book-makers to be the number 1 game this Christmas.
The challenge for our colleges is to get ahead of the industry. It takes four years to complete an undergraduate course. It is no good designing a course for the “current big thing”, we need to anticipate where the industry could go. All available evidence suggests that the obvious direction is toward more online gaming.
Sony will soon be bringing out a war game MAG (Maximum Action Game) that will allow up to 256 gamers to play simultaneously. It will be unprecedented when it arrives, but when it comes to gaming technology the pack won’t be long catching up.
It is estimated that Ireland has 250,000 online gamers of various frequency. This is in spite of our patchy roll out of broadband.
Magnet Entertainment have recently launched a service specifically tailored for Irish Gamers which tunes the internet line to maximise the speed at which online games respond to commands.
The result is a more vivid, enjoyable and competitive experience for all the console warriors and footballers
out there.
